MELVIN SOKOLSKY ON HOW HE SEES THINGS, OCTOBER 21.

Melvin Sokolsky began his professional career in 1959 at 21, when he joined Harpers Bazaar as a staff photographer. He very quickly made his mark with his “bubble” series of images, in which beautifully dressed models float in the air – including inside plexiglas bubbles. These images and others are actively exhibited and sold in galleries worldwide.

In addition to his editorial work, including fashion and portraiture, he went on to become one the most successful advertising photographers in the country. In 1972, he helped design a computerized zoom lens system that was nominated for a technical Academy Award, and that was used in the opening sequence of “The Godfather”. In the 1970s, he became a director of television commercials (winning 25 Clio awards), and he continues to shoot fashion and editorial photography today.

Sokolsky’s career has been defined in part by his willingness to use light in startling and unconventional ways – but never for “shock value” or simple effect – and in an increasingly cinematic style.

The painter starts with an idea, from stretching the canvas, to the creation of a palette that is so individual that it embodies the sum total of his or her being. A life based on individual creations which when gazing on the finished work, hopefully brings feelings of catharsis, until need and desire rears its ugly beautiful head again.”
